A local court on Wednesday sentenced 12 people, who had allegedly attacked police officials during protests in Sonepat, for the period they have already served since their arrest. The protests in Sonepat had come in the wake of a Dalit youth being killed in Gohana in August 2007.

Additional District and Sessions judge,Rajesh Garg, took a lenient view,as the accused had pleaded that they had no history of crime and also cited good conduct. They have served sentences ranging from five to six months.

The orders came on Wednesday,a day after they were held guilty for causing hurt, rioting and obstructing a public servant from discharging their duties. The accused,Rajesh,Sarwan,Javir,Satish,Zile Singh,Sikandar,Ramesh,Siri Krishan,Balwan,Ritik,Kavinder,Kuldeep and Sunny, are residents of Indra colony and Rajiv colony in Sonepat. The local SDM and some police officials were injured in the protests while a bus was also torched.
