Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s assertion in an interview to UNI that “good days have arrived” Monday prompted the Congress to draw a parallel between his statement and a popular remark by an American senator in the 1960s in the context of the Vietnam war. “During the Vietnam war when the Americans were defeated and were leaving, there was a phrase ‘Declare victory and leave’. This is like the same phrase. That is the spirit of that statement. Acche din have come, why are you debating now. End of story,” party spokesman Rajeev Gowda said.
The quote is attributed to Senator George D Aiken, a Republican from Vermont.

Congress also reacted to the PM’s assertion that discrimination or violence against any community will not be tolerated.
Gowda recalled that the PM had disapproved of Union Minister Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti’s remarks in Rajya Sabha in December. “The next week, you had BJP MP Sakshi Maharaj making a statement about Nathuram Godse. Somebody else questioned whether Mahatma Gandhi should be Father of the Nation… So the PM’s statement is purely intended to camouflage whatever all goes on as routine business on the part of Sangh Parivar and his acolytes,” he said.
