The Surat Metropolitan Court on Wednesday framed charges of extortion against Fazl-ur-Rahman who was allegedly hired by the parents of actor Shilpa Shetty to extort Rs 2 crore from the owner of Praful Sarees.

The court ordered Rahman, who was brought from Delhi’s Tihar Jail,to remain present before it on July 7.

Rahman’s lawyer,Manoj Patel, said: “The court has given us time till July 7 to file a reply. The hearing of evidence will start on his (Rahman’s) second visit to Surat. Shilpa’s parents had earlier obtained bail in this case.”

According to details of the case,Shilpa’s father,Surendra, and mother,Sunanda, had allegedly given money to the gangster to extort money from Pankaj Agrawal.

The extortion bid was made as the Shettys had a monetary dispute with Pankaj. According to the police,Shilpa had signed a contract with Praful Sarees for an advertisement, which continued to air on TV channels even after the contract expired. On learning about it,Shilpa’s parents demanded money from Pankaj, but he refused to pay. Later,Sunanda contacted Rahman to solve the dispute.

On May 1,2003,Pankaj’s brother,Shivnarayan Agrawal, had lodged a complaint against Surendra,Sunanda,Rahman and one Ashraf with the Umra police station in this regard.

The police arrested Shilpa’s parents on June 20 that year. During their interrogation, the police learnt that Sunanda had come in contact with Rahman through her driver.
