The three-and-a-half-year-old boy,who was kidnapped from the Golden Temple on Friday night, was found abandoned near Gurdwara Shaheedan in Amritsar on Sunday.

While the child,Gurmilap Singh, was found by a woman who runs a shop outside the gurdwara around 11 am,she waited till 5 pm for his parents to come. When that did not happen, she took the child to the B Division police station.

Gurmilap’s hair was found cut when he was recovered. According to police, this was done by the accused in an attempt to change his looks and conceal his identity.

Notably, the kidnapping was captured by CCTV cameras installed at the Parikarma of Golden Temple. The footage showed an unidentified woman picking up Gurmilap — who was sleeping along side his father — and leaving.

“Circulation of CCTV captured images to the media and others have helped put pressure on kidnappers and thus, they abandoned the boy at Gurdwara Shaheedan. He was crying and telling people that his name was Gurmilap and his father’s name was Manjit Singh,” Kotwali Station House Officer Sukhwinder Singh said.

When contacted,Amritsar Deputy Commissioner of Police Kaustubh Sharma said: “The only things the child has said so far is that he was taken away in a bus and that his hair was cut by a barber. We are first handing over the child to parents. After that we will ask him in detail where he was taken and whether he knows the persons who took him away. The child is too small and we would need to verify his accounts from his parents.”

On Friday, the family had come to the Golden Temple from Ferozepur. While Gurmilap Singh and his father were sleeping in the Parikrama, his mother had gone to perform sewa at the shrine.
