As Prime Minister Narendra Modi heads for the United Kingdom next month, the organisers of the visit are planning to host a reception for the PM at the Wembley stadium which has a capacity of about 70,000 people.

The Indian community organisers said that there has been an overwhelming response from the 1.5 million Indian diaspora with the event already being oversubscribed. The youngest applicant for the reception, titled “UK Welcomes Modi”, is a two-month-old baby, while the oldest is over 100 years old. “Around 10 per cent of the applicants are under the age of 16,” the organisers said.

“People from over 250 cities and towns in the UK have applied for the invitation. They have applied from as far north as Dundee and as far south as Plymouth,” a statement from the organisers said.

Over 60,000 people are expected to attend the reception. The tickets are due to be distributed by Wembley Stadium in the coming weeks.

Muhammed Butt, leader of Brent Council, the London Borough where Wembley Stadium is situated, said “I am looking forward to welcoming Prime Minister Modi to Brent. There is huge excitement among all communities.”

Ahead of the PM’s visit, a Modi Express bus was launched on Sunday. The bus will tour around iconic landmarks of central London for the next one month. It will also visit various community organisations across the UK, with its first stop being Ealing Road in Wembley — dubbed as ‘Little India’ — followed by Trafalgar Square to celebrate Diwali in London.

“We had ‘Chai Pe Charcha’ in India, now we will have ‘Bus Pe Charcha’ in the UK,” said Mayuri Parmar from the organising committee.
