The Supreme Court on Thursday deferred the hearing of an appeal against Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s election from Rae Bareli Lok Sabha constituency in 2014 on the ground of her citizenship and for allegedly playing the communal card to garner Muslim votes. A bench led by Justice Anil R Dave said that a seven-judge Constitution bench was already hearing a matter on similar issues and therefore it would be proper to wait till the larger bench takes a final view.

“We are not passing any orders. If we take a view in this matter, then it will not be appropriate as a larger bench is hearing the issue,” said the bench.

The Allahabad High Court had on July 11 dismissed a petition filed by one Ramesh Singh under the Representation of the People Act, and held that the election petition lacked material facts and did not constitute a complete cause of action.

Singh had contended that Sonia has dual citizenship and she got a Muslim cleric to urge people to vote for her.
