The Supreme Court Monday held there was nothing improper about granting actor Salman Khan bail hours after he was sentenced to five years in jail in the 2002 hit-and-run case.
A bench of Justice J S Khehar and Justice R Banumathi reasoned that nobody can be sent to jail without being provided a copy of the conviction order, and that is how Salman was let out.
Shooting down the lawyer’s argument, which questioned the Bombay HC order granting interim bail to the actor, the bench said it was done as per the law.
“You (lawyer) need to study law. Nobody can be sent to jail without a conviction order… that is the law… and that is how he (Salman) got bail,” said the bench.
The court was hearing Delhi lawyer M L Sharma’s petition seeking a probe into the circumstances leading to Salman’s acquittal in the case.
