The Indian Railways cancelled Jhansi-Lucknow Intercity, Jhansi-Kanpur passenger and Barauni Gwalior Mail following the derailment of Patna-Indore Express. While 11 other trains, Lokmanya Tilak (12542, 12541), Rapti Sagar SF Express (12522, 12511), Pushpak Expres (12534), Lucknow Superfast (12107), Gwalior Barauni Mail (11124), Sabarmati Express (19167), Kushinagar Express (11015, 11016), Lucknow Pune Express (12104) were diverted after the train tragedy took place.
Fourteen coaches of Patna-Indore train got derailed near Pukhrayan in Kanpur, on Sunday morning. The death toll, reported to be 63 so far, is expected to rise. Rescue operations are going on as NDRF volunteers and railway police work to pull passengers trapped in the coaches. The medical team was also rushed to the site to provide first-aid to the victims while those seriously injured were taken to hospitals in Kanpur.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the deaths in the train accident. “Anguished beyond words on the loss of lives due to the derailing of the Patna-Indore Express. My thoughts are with the bereaved families,” the Prime Minister tweeted.
While Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Akhilesh Yadav, also took cognizance of the situation and has asked the DGP to personally monitor the situation. The Indian Railways has issued help line numbers for the kin of the victims.
