In a televised interview to a private news channel CNN News 18, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that all those self-appointed guardians who were trying to create tension in the country did not like that Modi is with the Dalits. “That Modi devotes himself to tribals. I am devoted to the welfare of all Dalits, oppressed, underprivileged and deprived,” said Modi.
Lashing out at vested interests for using this plank for political gains, PM Modi said they must stop giving political tones to social problems. “It doesn’t matter whether the incident is big or small. It shouldn’t have happened in the first place. I’m devoted to the development of all Dalits. Those who see this as an obstruction to their politics are levelling baseless allegations.”
PM Modi highlighted the fact that such incidents only hurt the interests of the country and that they must not happen at all. “Violence against dalits and tribals, data shows that these incidents have gone down as compared to the previous govt. Law and order is state subject. Some issue are selectively picked up by people and blaming Modi for it. I don’t know how it serves any purpose,” added Modi.
After the Una Dalit flogging incident caught the nation’s attention, PM Modi broke his silence and expressed concern over the recent attacks on people from Dalit community. He had earlier said that there is a need for strict action against those involved in it. Modi urged opponents to stop doing politics on Dalit and asked the assaulters to attack him instead of Dalits. “If you want to attack, attack me and not Dalits. If you want to shoot, shoot me and not Dalits,” he had said.
The Prime Minister said there are few bad elements, shortcomings in our society and they need to be controlled.
