The Meghalaya High Court has directed the Centre to provide Z and Y category security to its chief justice and other judges, respectively, after retirement, in view of the risk they run because of handling cases connected with insurgents.

Chief Justice Uma Nath Singh and Justice T Nanda Kumar Singh, while disposing off a writ petition filed by Registrar General of the HC, said Thursday that the security cover (Z for the CJ and Y for other judges) should not be disturbed “even upon fresh assessment of threat perceptions” after they retire.  It asked Joint Secretary (NE) in Home Ministry to  issue orders to provide security at the residence of Chief Justice and other judges after they demit office.
