For the family of first officer Satinder Singh Bhinder, who died in the Air India Kanishka bombing of 1985, the past three decades have been a roller-coaster ride. The release from a Canadian prison of the only convict in the case, Inderjit Singh Reyat, on Wednesday has once again opened old wounds.
“It has been 30 years now. What should I say? That is Canada’s legal system. We cannot criticise it (the decision to release Reyat). That is their way of dealing with such cases,” said Amarjit Kaur Bhinder, the former pilot’s wife, now in her mid 60s.
She added, “Reyat is a Sikh and Sikhism is a religion of purity. He knew fully well at the time of making the bomb as to who and where it was going to be used. He should have revealed names but he chose otherwise.”
The Air India Flight 182 crashed into the Atlantic near the Irish coast after a bomb in its cargo hold exploded, on June 23, 1985. It took the lives of 331 people. The flight was on its way from Montreal to New Delhi.
