Kerala local body polls: Parties floated by fringe Muslim outfits gain seats

Political parties of right wing Muslim outfits, Popular Front of India and Jamaat-e-Islami, have together bagged 93 seats in the local body elections in Kerala.

Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), of Popular Front of India, bagged 51 seats in various local bodies. Of them, 10 were in municipalities. In the last local body elections, its electoral debut, SDPI had won only two seats in Kerala.

The election came close to the heels of PFI activists being found behind the chopping of college professor’s palm, on charges of insulting the Prophet in a question paper.

The Welfare Party of India, the political arm of Jamaat-e-Islami, won 42 seats in various local bodies. Besides, the party came second in 50 other seats in its electoral debut in local body elections in Kerala.
