The Centre for English Studies (CES) at Jawaharlal Nehru University has been adjudged as one of the top 100 English departments in the world by the QS World University Rankings-2011.

Apart from some IIT departments,no Indian department has been ranked as high as this. CES chairperson Dr Saugata Bhaduri said,“We are extremely proud, and also humbled,by this achievement.”

Stating that the CES was launched in the early 1980s,Bhaduri said,“We are not a very old department. This is a great honour, especially because it comes so early.”

He attributed this to the quality of publications done by faculty members, and research done by its students.

The Delhi University and University of Mumbai also feature in the same list, figuring between 151 and 200 in the QS World University rankings.

Head of the Department of English (University of Delhi) Sumanyu Stapathy said the ranking was “low” because their website is not updated regularly. “This is not really fair because the department is doing much better. Just because the website is not properly updated,we have been assigned such a low rank,” he said.
