Madhya Pradesh police picked up two labourers from Jamnagar on Monday in connection with the alleged kidnapping of a teenage girl from the state in 2012.

The MP police detained Mangali Bhil and her brother-in-law Anil Bhil from Kathiawad Nirashrit Balashram, an orphanage where they had been brought by officers of Social Defence Department of Gujarat. Police said the two were found responsilble for kidnapping of Suhila Dhokla (13) from Bagh in Dhar district of MP in 2012.

“Sushila had run away from her home in Chikapagi village in Dhar district of MP in July 2012 as her father used to drink and beat her. Her mother had also run away and married another man,” Andreas Katara, police sub inspector of Bagh in Dhar district, said.

After leaving her home, the teenager reached Bagh where Mangali saw her. The woman, who was a widow, kept the girl with her and brought her to Gujarat to work as an agricultural labourer with her. She had brought her to Laitpar village in Dhrol taluka of Jamnagar this year, Kanaksinh Zala, social defence officer of Rajkot said.

Meanwhile, Sushila’s father Bhalsi lodged a missing person complaint with Bagh police station in July 2012. The same complaint was turned into a case of kidnapping in October 2013 as the girl remained missing.

“After learning that her own daughter Antar, whom she had left behind in MP, had gone missing, Mangali went to her village Ghatbori in Dhar. In the meantime, Sushila ran away from the farm in Latipar on the 18th of last month and reached Rajkot,” said Zala.

Five-year-old Basanti, whose parents were working on a nearby farm in Latipar, also joined Sushila. The two girls reached Rajkot city where they were spotted by officers of Pradyuman Nagar police. The officers contacted child helpline which alerted District Child Protection Unit (DCPU) of Rajkot. The DCPU put the two girls in Balashrma, an orphanage.

“Managali introduced Sushila to her employer in Latipar as her daughter Sapna. But during counselling, the teenager told the entire story,” Mitsu Vyas, counselor with DCPU, said.

After Mangali returned to Latipar, she and her brother-in-law Anil were brought to Rajkot on Monday by social defence department officers. They were detained by MP police later on. Sushila, however, refused to go to her father’s home and therefore, MP police said, they would send her to a women’s protection home in Indore.
