Congress Parliamentary Party chief Sonia Gandhi Wednesday inaugurated the party’s new national headquarters located at 9A, Kotla Road in New Delhi, in the presence of party president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi.
The ceremony, which began by party leaders hoisting the party flag and chanting Vande Mataram, also saw in attendance, Congress general secretary (organisation) KC Venugopal; Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy CM DK Shivakumar; Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, and Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
In the making for one-and-a-half decades, the headquarters is named as the “Indira Gandhi Bhawan.”
Addressing the gathering, Venugopal said: “It is with immense pride and joy that we are here… We witness a proud moment… This building is not a structure of bricks, but a testament of the dedication of Congress workers who have tirelessly served the nation through the party.” 400 top leaders of the party from across India attended the event, including members of the Congress Working Committee, Permanent and Special Invitees, Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) presidents, Congress Legislature Party leaders, MPs from both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, former Chief Ministers, ex-PCC Presidents, and former CLP Leaders and Union Ministers.
Rahul Gandhi too congratulated the party leaders on the occasion.
The foundation stone for the new building was laid by Manmohan Singh as Prime Minister and Sonia Gandhi as Congress president way back in December 2009. But it took the party 15 years to complete the construction of the building.
