Commencing the hearing into CBI Director Alok Verma’s plea, the Supreme Court Friday ordered the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) to conclude its probe in the case within two weeks. Verma had Wednesday filed a plea challenging the Centre’s decision to divest him of his powers and send him on leave in view of the internal feud between him and Special Director Rakesh Asthana. The government, in a midnight move on Tuesday, had appointed N Nageshwar Rao as interim director. The apex court today issued a notice to the Centre and the CBI on pleas by Alok Verma and NGO Common Cause challenging the government’s leave order.
What the Supreme Court said today:
*A Supreme Court Bench headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi has given two weeks to the CVC to complete its probe against CBI chief Alok Verma.
*The Centre and the CBI will provide the CVC report to the court in a sealed cover within 10 days.
*The probe will be monitored by retired Supreme Court judge A K Patnaik, the Supreme Court ordered.
*Interim director N Nageshwar Rao will not take any decision in any major or policy matter, but will only look after the functioning of CBI.
*All decisions taken by Rao from October 23, the date of his appointment as interim director, till this hour have to be submitted to the court in a sealed cover. This should consist of all decisions including the transfer of investigation and change of officers, the apex court said.
*The decisions taken by Rao should be placed before the court in a sealed cover on November 12, the next date of hearing.
