At least 11 people were killed and several injured after a bus fell into a canal in an Andhra Pradesh village. The Hyderabad-bound private bus fell in between two flyovers near Mullupadu village in Krishna district on Tuesday morning. There were 38 passengers in the Diwakar Travels agency bus that was coming from Bhubaneswar after a halt at Visakhapatnam when the incident occurred. Police officials fear that death toll may go up as the front portion of the bus was mangled badly and many passengers were still trapped inside.

The injured have been admitted to various hospitals at Nandigama and Vijayawada. Most people suffered severe head injures and fractures as the bus jumped the railing and fell into the canal in between the two flyovers. A passenger told the doctors at Andhra Hospital at Vijayawada that he noticed the driver Adinarayana Swamy was very drowsy. Deputy Chief Minister (Home) N China Rajappa has directed the Krishna district police to carry out rescue operations.

Most of the passengers are from Visakhapatnam, Bhubaneswar, Srikakulam and Hyderabad. This is the second major incident involving Diwakar Travels agency owned by Telugu Desam Party MP from Anantapur J C Diwakar Reddy. In October 2013, a Diwakar Travels multi-axle Volvo bus taken on lease by Jabbar Travels coming from Bengaluru to Hyderabad caught fire killing 45 passengers at Kothakota in Mahbubnagar district.

More details awaited.
