An explosion rocked Rameshwaram Cafe in Bengaluru’s Whitefield area, causing grievous injuries to at least nine people.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said investigations are on to ascertain the cause and nature of the explosion and added that it might have been caused by an “improvised explosive device”.
Ruling out a gas leak as the cause, CM Siddaramaiah said the CCTV footage has revealed that a “man was seen keeping a bag in the cafe.”
The incident occurred around 12.45 pm during the bustling lunch hour when the cafe is usually crowded with employees from nearby offices.
The injured reportedly include both customers and staff members of the cafe, highlighting the indiscriminate nature of the incident.
A forensics team, accompanied by police officials from multiple precincts including HAL, Whitefield, and Indiranagar, is at the site to gather evidence and assess the extent of the damage. The police said they were probing the incident from all angles.
Additionally, sniffer dogs have been deployed to aid in the search for any potential clues or hazards at the site.
Meanwhile, the area surrounding the cafe has been sealed off.
“We heard a blast at around 1:05pm and I stepped out to see that the cafe was engulfed with smoke. Some localities and I managed to help around 5-6 burn victims and sent them to nearby hospital. The fire engine arrived only 30 minutes later. There was no fire only smoke,” a businessman in the area at the time of the blast told The Indian Express.
Following the explosion at the eatery, Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara took stock of the situation. Speaking to reporters, he said the Commissioner and Director General of Police have done a spot inspection to ascertain how the blast took place, who did it or whether it could have been an accident.
