Thirty-one women were murdered and 144 were raped in Tripura in fiscal year 2023-24, stated a home department report tabled in the Assembly during the ongoing Budget session.
According to the government data, 39 persons were arrested for the murders, but only six continue to remain incarcerated.
In total, 9,308 cases related to crimes against women were lodged in the northeastern state from 2023 till January this year. The probe was conducted in 8,485 cases, while investigation has not been completed in the remaining 823 cases.
In January, quoting National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha said the state witnessed a 19.3 per cent decline in overall crime rate in 2024 compared to the previous year. Tripura now has the third-lowest crime rate among all 28 states in the country, he added.
Citing the same NCRB data, CM Saha also claimed that crimes against women have reduced by 55 per cent on a year-on-year basis.
