When it comes to digestive health, there are many myths and misconceptions floating around. One common myth is that drinking water with food or after it can dilute stomach acids, making them less effective in breaking down food, leading to impaired digestion and other issues, like bloating and gas.

The truth is that stomach acids are designed to function effectively regardless of water intake. Drinking water is essential for maintaining proper hydration and can actually aid in digestion rather than hinder it.

The stomach produces gastric acid, primarily hydrochloric acid, which plays a crucial role in breaking down food, activating digestive enzymes and killing harmful bacteria. The stomach’s environment is highly acidic, with a pH typically ranging from 1.5 to 3.5, which is necessary for proper digestion.

Stomach acid versus water

The stomach is a muscular organ designed to accommodate large amounts of food and liquid. When you eat or drink, the stomach expands to accommodate incoming substances. While water does enter the stomach and mix with the contents, it does not significantly alter the overall acidity of the gastric juices.

The stomach has a remarkable ability to maintain its acidic environment. The presence of food triggers the stomach to produce more gastric acid, helping to restore the optimal pH for digestion. Drinking water may temporarily increase the volume of contents in the stomach, but the production of gastric acid is a continuous process that adapts to the body’s needs.

What’s water’s role in digestion?

Hydration is vital for overall health, including digestive health. Drinking water before, during and after meals can support digestion in several ways. Water helps in the dissolution of nutrients and supports the enzymatic processes in the stomach. It keeps the digestive system functioning smoothly, reducing the risk of constipation. Water assists in transporting nutrients throughout the body after digestion.

What are the benefits of drinking water with meals?

Drinking water can help soften food, making it easier for the stomach to break it down. Water can help you feel fuller, which may prevent overeating and assist with weight management. It can cleanse your palate, enhance the flavour of food and make your meals more enjoyable.
