Director Lokesh Kanagaraj’s action-thriller Leo, starring ‘Thalapathy’ Vijay in the titular role, has passed two new benchmarks at the box office. On day seven of release, Leo added Rs 12 crore across all languages in India, according to industry tracker Sacnilk, which means that in one week, the film has made more than Rs 250 crore in India and has grossed over Rs 500 crore worldwide.

Leo’s current domestic collections stand at Rs 262 crore, while its global gross has passed Rs 500 crore, according to an X (formerly Twitter) account identifying as the official mouthpiece for the film. Leo is already the second-biggest Tamil language movie of the year, behind Rajinikanth’s Jailer, and the third-biggest Tamil film of all time, behind Jailer and 2.0.

Leo delivered the second-biggest opening for a Tamil film ever, when it made Rs 64 across India on day one, which it followed up with Rs 35 crore on day two, Rs 39 crore on day three, Rs 41 crore on day four, Rs 35 crore on day five and Rs 31 crore on day six. While most of the film’s revenue has come from Vijay’s home state of Tamil Nadu, Leo has also been on a record streak in Kerala, where it added Rs 2 crore on day seven. Overall Tamil-language occupancy for the movie was reported as 34% on day seven, the lowest yet. Leo has also made over Rs 15 crore from the Hindi dubbed version, despite the fact that it wasn’t released in multiplexes owing to a theatrical release window dispute.

Much of the excitement around it stems from its connections to Lokesh’s cinematic universe of movies, which also includes Karthi’s Kaithi and Kamal Haasan’s Vikram. Leo has handily outperformed both movies, and it now remains to be seen if it will be able to overtake Jailer’s Rs 604 crore global gross. Despite the significant drop in collections on day seven, it’s entirely possible for Leo to cross the Rs 600 crore mark globally, seeing as it’s still only a week into its run.
