Anyone who has ever watched a Sooraj Barjatya film, would never think of him visiting a night club, and Sooraj, who is now 61 years old, has never visited one. Except for that one time when he went out to a club in Mumbai and was asked to leave by the patrons. In a new interview, Sooraj laughed and recalled that he once went to a night club with his wife and soon after he reached, one of the patrons told him that is a place for “paapi (sinful)” people so he should leave.
In a chat with Mid-day, the Hum Saath Saath Hain filmmaker recalled the time when he was thinking about making Main Prem Ki Deewani Hoon, starring Kareena Kapoor, Abhishek Bachchan and Hrithik Roshan. As part of the film’s preparation, the filmmaker decided to visit a night club. However, his visit surprised director-choreographer Farah Khan who happened to be at the same place. He recalled the incident and said, “Farah was so surprised and excited that she yelled, ‘What are you doing here?'” Farah was so surprised that she immediately called Karan Johar to inform him about Sooraj’s visit. “She immediately called up Karan, and was like, ‘Karan, look who is here’,” Sooraj recalled with a laugh.
After his encounter with Farah, Sooraj decided to sit in a corner and watch what was happening around him. However, he was interrupted by a man in the club. He said, “A man who was just dancing in the club, walked up to me and asked, ‘What are you doing here?’ I said, ‘I am just here to observe things.’ He was like, ‘No, you go away from here. Yeh hum paapi logo ke liye hai.‘ (This place is for sinners like us.) I left after that. I thought, maybe, I am not meant to be here.”
