Karan Johar’s Koffee with Karan dropped its first episode featuring Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone on Thursday and the much-loved Bollywood couple, who have now been together for 11 years, opened up about their love story and the proposal for the first time. It is well-known that Deepika and Ranveer’s love story started on the set of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela but now, Deepika and Ranveer have revealed that they were practically “inseparable” during the making of the film.
On the show, Ranveer recounted that he had been in a long term relationship before he met Deepika, and she had been single for a while. The couple met when Deepika was cast in the film. Kareena Kapoor was cast in the film but when she walked out, Deepika was brought in. Ranveer recalled a lunch at Sanjay’s house where he was sitting next to Deepika as they had crab for lunch and a tiny piece of crab meat got stuck in her teeth. Ranveer recalled, “I said you got something on your teeth, she said clean it.” For Ranveer, the “moment of spark” happened right there. He said when he put his pinky finger in her mouth, he felt a 440 watt jolt.
Deepika said that when she and Ranveer started dating each other, they were still allowed to see other people but she “would always go back to him” because in her mind, she was committed to him. In her words, “until he proposed to me, there was no commitment as such.” Ranveer shared that he knew Deepika was “the one” in six months. He then revealed that they started dating in 2012, got engaged in 2015, and kept their engagement a secret from the rest of the world for three years.
Ranveer and Deepika shared that they were “inseparable” during the shoot of Bhansali’s film as they would spend all their time with each other. He recalled that once they were shooting a kissing scene where a brick was supposed to come in through the window. When an actual brick came through during the shoot, they were “oblivious” to it because they were so into each other.
Ranveer then recalled how he proposed to Deepika after years of dating each other. He revealed that he did it in the Maldives and while his parents were well aware of the engagement, Deepika’s parents were not in the loop. “Just her and me, on a sliver of sand, in the middle of the sea. I was like this is it, I have done it, this is the perfect scenario. I pop the question, gave her the ring, she did not expect it, she got emotional and that was it, she said yes and I felt like the king of the world, and then we were engaged,” he recalled.
Ranveer then shared how they broke to Deepika’s family. They flew back to Bengaluru from the Maldives and Ranveer had a plan prepared to tell her parents and sister but Deepika jumped the gun and shared it with them during a family dinner where they had a few guests too. Everyone congratulated them but Ranveer could sense the tension in the room. “I felt like if we were in a larger group, it would be easier to break the news,” she recalled.
Ranveer and Deepika got married in 2018.
