The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT Indore) recently introduced a new BTech Course in space science and engineering. The course will offer students the study and prediction of climate change, communication, navigation, defence, security, survey, agriculture, environment, ecology, and astronomy.

If space and astronomy fascinate you, this might be the right course for you. Here’s a brief on course structure, eligibility criteria and curriculum.

BTech in space science and engineering – course structure and seats

Students will be exposed to cutting-edge research and tech development in the sectors of payloads, small satellites and detector design; data analytics; imaging; high-end numerical simulations; with applications targeted towards climate change, sustainable development, ecology, earth observations, agriculture, defense, communication, navigation and astronomy.

Students of this programme can specialise in one of the following domains with curated elective courses and a semester-long research project – space instrumentation – detectors and payloads, imaging and data analytics, remote sensing and atmospheric engineering, astronomy and astrophysics.

A total of 20 seats are available in BTech in space science and engineering. It is a four-year full-time undergraduate degree programme divided into eight semesters. In each semester, candidates will have to study 6 to 7 subjects along with elective options.

Admission to all three programmes will be done based on JEE Advanced score. Additionally, candidates must have completed the class 12 (or equivalent) examination from any recognised state or central board.

Students who pursue the course can contribute to research and development in space technology by enrolling in higher studies. They can also work with the government as well as private sector on space technology development projects.
