The Kerala Assembly was adjourned for the second consecutive day on Friday, within 10 minutes of the session beginning, after Congress-led Opposition members protested the case registered against seven MLAs in connection with the scuffle between the Opposition and the security staff on Wednesday.
Soon after Question Hour began, Opposition MLAs raised slogans and placards protesting the case registered against MLAs under non-bailable sections. Opposition leader V D Satheesan said that a fabricated case was registered against the MLAs to suppress the Opposition. When Satheesan’s mike was switched off, other MLAs trooped into the well of the House. As the commotion continued, Speaker A N Shamseer adjourned proceedings for the day.
On Thursday too, the Assembly had been adjourned after a ruckus with Opposition MLAs alleging denial of rights. Later, Satheesan said the Opposition would not surrender its rights. “We do not have intentions to disrupt proceedings in the Assembly but wanted meaningful discussions,” he said, alleging Deputy Chief Marshal of the Assembly Moideen Hussain created trouble in the Assembly that led to Wednesday’s ruckus. “We will continue to protest until the government and the chief minister acknowledge the rights of the Opposition. The chief minister is reluctant to give answers to the questions raised by the Opposition,” he said.
The Assembly complex had witnessed unprecedented scenes on Wednesday when a section of Opposition UDF legislators who marched to the office of Speaker Shamseer, accusing him of being biased in the House, got into a scuffle with House marshals. Opposition MLAs were agitated after the Speaker denied permission for a notice for an adjournment motion moved by Congress MLA Uma Thomas regarding the assault of a minor girl in daylight in Thiruvananthapuram recently.
On Thursday, the police had registered two cases in connection with Wednesday’s scuffle. In one case, Opposition MLAs were booked under non-bailable offences based on a complaint from the Assembly security staff. The other case was registered against two CPM MLAs under bailable offences following a complaint from Opposition MLAs.
