Top lieutenant of gangster Gaja Marne, Sunil Bansode, arrested after 4 years on the run

Bansode, who was booked under the stringent Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities (MPDA) Act in 2021, was arrested from the Warje area of Pune by a team from Zone 3 of the Pune City police following intelligence that he was visiting the area. He was arrested during the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday.

“So now both his henchmen and sharpshooters, Rupesh Marne and Bansode, are behind bars,” said Sambhaji Kadam, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone 3.

Gangster Gajanan Marne, who is currently in prison, has nearly 30 serious criminal cases registered against him. He made headlines in February 2021 when a rally comprising dozens of luxury cars was taken out in his support on the Mumbai Expressway after he was released from Taloja Prison.

Marne was released from prison after a court acquitted him and 13 aides over the lack of evidence in the murder of Santosh Hiraman Gawade, alias Pappu, a rival gang member. Several close aides of Gaja Marne, including Bansode, were booked by the Pune police in connection with the controversial highway rally.

Approximately 30 high-end cars, which were part of the rally, were also seized by the Pune police.

The Maharashtra Police, who were criticised over the rally, filed multiple cases against Gajanan and his aides in Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Raigad, and Navi Mumbai. One offence was also registered against them for spreading social media posts glorifying the gangster, which were in circulation since his release from Taloja prison.
