Pune: Pubs, bars to remain open till 5am; cops to intensify action against drunk driving

Even as the deadline for pubs and bars in Pune is extended till 5am due to New Year celebrations, the city police has warned action against those who would be found driving vehicles after consuming alcohol on the intervening night between December 31 and January 1.

During a press conference on Monday, Commissioner of Pune police Amitesh Kumar said 17 spots have been identified where people will gather for New Year celebrations. He said police would be keeping a close watch on these spots to prevent any untoward incident and maintain the law and order situation.

Kumar also said action would be carried out at 23 spots against drunk driving. “An extensive drive will be carried out and action would be taken against those violating norms,” he said.

Kumar appealed to the people to avoid driving after consuming alcohol. He also warned action against pubs, bars and nightspots to follow the rules strictly.

Charansingh Rajput, Superintendent of excise department, Pune, confirmed that the deadline for the pubs and bars in Pune has been extended till 5am on January 1.

Meanwhile, traffic changes have been imposed on Fergusson College (FC) road, Jangli Maharaj (JM) road and the Mahatma Gandhi (MG) road in Pune city, which are the key spots where people crowd in large numbers on the night of December 31 for New Year celebrations.

According to a press release issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police (traffic) Amol Zende, the road from Good Luck Chowk to the main gate of Fergusson College will be a ‘no vehicle zone’ from 5pm of December 31 till 5am on January 1.

During the same period, the stretch from 15 August Chowk to Hotel Aurora Towers on the M G Road will be a “no vehicles zone.”

Vehicles coming to F C Road from Karve Nagar and Kothrud side would be diverted from Khandoji Baba Chowk towards Law college Road and Alka talkies junctions.

Vehicles going towards F C road from J M Road would be diverted at the Rani Lakshmibai Chowk towards Pune Municipal Corporation as per requirement.

Some of the internal roads connecting with M G Road would be closed for traffic from 5pm on December 31 till the crowd disperses.
