The Pune City police have launched a probe after a constable posted with its Crime Branch was attacked on the head with a sharp weapon by two unidentified men following a road rage incident that took place at Law College Road early on Monday. The constable was rushed to a hospital where his condition is reportedly stable.
The injured police constable has been identified as Amol Katkar, who is currently posted with Unit 3 of the Crime Branch. Katkar, who is being treated at a private hospital, sustained a serious head injury in the incident, officers said.
Krushikesh Rawale, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Zone 1, said, “An offence is being registered in the case. The local police station has launched a probe to identify and arrest the suspects.”
The incident took place in an area under the jurisdiction of the Deccan Gymkhana Police Station. An officer from the station said Katkar was on his way home on a two-wheeler after completing his duty at around 1 am on Monday when he was attacked. “At Law College Road, he exchanged words with two men on a bike who were riding in an unruly manner. An argument ensued between Katkar and the two men. Initial information suggests that one of them attacked Katkar on his head with a sharp weapon. They then fled from the spot on the bike,” the officer said.
Sainath Thombre, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Vishrambag division, said, “Preliminary probe indicates this was a case of road rage.”
The police said that Katkar himself informed the control room about the incident. A team of beat marshals rushed to the location and shifted him to a private hospital in the Deccan Gymkhana area, an officer added.
