The Pune city police have arrested an employee of Ammunition Factory, Khadki (AFK), for allegedly stealing live cartridges manufactured from the ordnance unit.

The police have recovered 22 live cartridges from the accused, Ganesh Vasantrao Borude, 39, a resident of Kalpataru Housing Society in Chandan Nagar. He was remanded in police custody till April 2.

Based on intelligence inputs, a team from Khadki police station led by sub-inspector Maloji Kamble and AFK officials laid a trap at Gate number 12 of the establishment and nabbed Borude around 5.30 pm on Friday.

During the searches, the police found the live cartridges from his scooter. Police said the accused was not having any licence or essential permission for carrying them.

A first information report (FIR) was lodged against Borude at the Khadki police station and subsequently he was placed under arrest around 12.15 am on Saturday.

He was booked under section 303 (2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and sections of the Indian Arms Act.

Police sub-Inspector Digvijay Chougule, the investigating officer of this case, produced the accused before the Khadki court on Saturday afternoon and sought his custody for 10 days for further investigation.

The police submitted before the court that an investigation is being done to know whether a Naxalite or any anti-national organisation is involved in the crime.

The police told the court that AFK is a highly secure establishment that supplied ammunition to important agencies in the country. It is being investigated how and for what purpose the accused committed the theft and kept the cartridges in his scooter.

A probe was on to find out whether the accused was planning to sell the stolen cartridges to private persons outside the AFK, investigators told the court.

The police said the accused was not cooperating with the investigators and a probe was on to know if he committed theft of ammunition in the past and whether more persons are involved in the crime.
