A team of Satara police has gunned down a dreaded criminal who attacked them with a knife while they were trying to arrest him from Shikrapur in Pune district on Saturday evening.

Police have identified the deceased as Lakhan alias Mahesh Popat Bhosale, a resident of Khatav in Satara district.

Tushar Doshi, Superintendent of Police, Satara said that Lakhan’s name cropped up during the investigation of armed robberies in Satara in the past two days. Doshi said the investigators had identified three persons, including Lakhan Bhosale, for their alleged involvement in the robberies committed at knife-point.

“Further investigation revealed that Lakhan and one more Amol Kere of Asgaon in Satara, both wanted in the robbery cases, were located at Shikrapur. So, a team of Satara police reached Pune to nab them,” Doshi said.

Satara police chased and nabbed Lakhan at Maltan Phata in Shikrapur around 6.30 am. But he allegedly attacked a policeman Sujit Bhosale with a sharp-edged weapon. While Sujit was injured, Lakhan allegedly attacked another policeman Tushar Bhosale.

So, in self-defence, the police fired a bullet at Lakhan from their service pistol. The bullet hit Lakhan, leaving him injured. Lakhan was taken to a hospital but was pronounced dead by the doctors. Meanwhile, the police also nabbed his accomplice Kere from Shikrapur. Lakhan’s body was taken to the Sassoon hospital in Pune for post-mortem. The injured policeman was also provided treatment at a hospital, and he was reported to be stable, police said.

In November 2022, a team of local crime branch of the Pune rural police, led by inspector Avinash Shilimkar, had arrested Lakhan (aged nearly 30 years), from Ghatgewadi village in Baramati. At that time, he was having 22 crimes of murder, robbery and house break-ins, registered against him at different police stations in Satara, Pune and Solapur districts.

Pune rural police had invoked the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) against Lakhan in a case lodged against him at the Wadgaon Nimbalkar police station in 2022. Police said he was currently out on bail and again allegedly started committing crimes.
