At long last Met says light showers likely to continue for three days

After a delay of nearly nine days, the south-west monsoon arrived in the city on Sunday. According to the Met department, the southwest monsoon covered almost all of the state on June 17,as forecast recently.

The normal onset date for monsoon in Pune is June 8. However, this year it was delayed because of “weak monsoon currents”. Fairly widespread rainfall was recorded in Konkan,Madhya Maharashtra,Pune,Mumbai, parts of Marathwada on Sunday. The department had earlier forecast the onset between June 15 and 17. The monsoon had already set in over neighbouring Gujarat.

“These rains — mainly light showers — are likely to continue for the next three days,’’ said Sunita Devi, director, weather central,India Meteorological Department (IMD),Pune.

While the city witnessed light showers, some areas on the outskirts recorded heavy rainfall. “The city will experience light or moderate showers over the next three days. We cannot expect heavy showers yet as the monsoon currents are weak,’’ she said.

After the monsoon arrived in Kerala on June 5,its progress has been slow over the west coast. However,Met department does not want to directly correlate the onset with average rainfall for the season. “The Met department is set to give the forecast for July and August in the last week of June. The long-range forecast earlier gave a normal monsoon forecast for the season,’’ said Met officials.

The maximum delay in onset for the city was in 1972 and 2009 when it arrived on June 21.

Pune is located in the middle of central Maharashtra belt, which stretches from Nashik/Jalgaon in the north and Kolhapur down south. The Met department said there was fairly widespread rainfall in the city and surrounding areas. Parts of Lonavala witnessed heavy rains. The rush of tourists resulted in a major traffic jam on the old Pune-Mumbai highway in Lonavala.
