Hardikar said,”The threat to cyber systems is a serious issue, and Maha Metro is not immune to such risks. Since Metro operations involve multiple departments and connect directly with the public, it is essential to have a strong system to defend against cyberattacks.”
Incidentally, the Maha-Metro has decided to undertake technology based driverless train operations for the proposed new routes in Pune and Thane.
The driverless train operation runs without human intervention and is considered to be more reliable and punctual but it requires computer based technology in the train, signalling, telecom service, public address system, ticket system, electrical supply system and safety measures, officials said.
In Pune, the driverless system will be introduced for routes proposed in the second phase starting with Line 4 from Khadakwasla to Kharadi while the currently operational routes from PCMC to Swargate and Vanaz to Ramwadi will have the driverless train operations after the existing system is upgraded.
IIT Kanpur will Strengthen IT systems and raise awareness among officials regarding strict adherence to cybersecurity norms. It will also help Maha-Metro in ensuring cyber security over Operations control, Signaling, Telecom, Power supply, Automatic fare collection, Building and tunnel management and train onboard systems, Hardikar said.

The initiative will align Maha Metro’s cybersecurity with global standards.
This is the first agreement of IIT Kanpur with any Metro organisation in the country to strengthen IT systems and increase awareness among officials for strict adherence to cybersecurity rules.
It will also help in improving the quality of grievance redressal mechanisms to make them more responsive, accessible, and meaningful while reducing the burden of compliance and limiting the involvement of criminal proceedings in cases of minor violations, Hardikar said.
