City artistes’ stellar show in national awards for cinema

The results for the 59th National awards that were announced on Wednesday saw artistes from Pune being felicitated for their contribution to the film industry.

The results for the 59th National awards that were announced on Wednesday saw artistes from Pune being felicitated for their contribution to the film industry. Marathi feature film Deool,directed by Umesh Kulkarni,won awards for the Best Film,Best Actor and Best Dialogues.

Girish Kulkarni,who played the role of Keshav in Deool,won the Best Actor award. He also bagged the award for best dialogues. Bal Gandharva received the Best Costume and Best Singer awards. Shala,directed by Sujay Dahake was adjudged as the Best Marathi Film.

Umesh Kulkarni said,“Both Girish and I were pleasantly surprised to have learnt that we won these awards. For us,the driving force behind Deool was always the people who worked towards making the film,and of course,the audience. It is amazing to win the national award for the Best Film. The icing on the cake were the two awards that Girish won.”

Pune-based Vikram Gaikwad bagged the award for the Best Make-Up artist for Bal Gandharva and The Dirty Picture. Speaking about the award,Gaikwad said,“I had fought for this category to be included in the National Awards. It’s an honour to receive this award. For Bal Gandharva,set in the 1920s,I used make-up from that period. The Dirty Picture was a challenge for I had to portray the rise and fall of the star effectively through make-up.”

The Best Singer (Male) award went to Anand Bhate for the movie Bal Gandharva. Through his songs,he tried to recreate the music of an era gone by.

Gautam Nair,a second year student from Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) won the Best Audiography award for the film 1,2 directed by Prantik Basu. The award included Rajat Kamal and a cash prize of Rs. 50,000.

Renu Sawant,a third year Direction student at FTII received a Special Mention for her film Airawat. “I felt as if it was an acknowledgment of the hard work that we put in. The 10-minute film deals with the anticipation of an event. We took around five months to make it,” she said.

Bol Patancha Mooknayak,a docudrama in the non-fiction category won the Best Biographical/ Historical Reconstruction award. The film is produced by Pune-based Anil Damle and directed by Virendra Valsagkar.

Bol Patancha Mooknayaktalks about the life of Vishnupant Damle — one of the founder members of the legendary Prabhat Film Company. V G Damle started his journey as boy living in poverty in a village and went on to become one of the most stellar personalities the film history of India,working as an art director,cameraman,sound recordist,producer and director,for many acclaimed films.
