Pune city police have arrested an alleged Bangladeshi national for residing in India illegally for the last 10 years.

Officers identified the accused as Ehsan Hafiz Shaikh, 34, currently residing in the city’s Maharshi Nagar area. He runs a T-shirt business. A first information report (FIR) was lodged in this regard at Swargate police station on Thursday.

Ashok Patil, Police Sub-Inspector, said the accused initially worked at a garment workshop and later set up his own business in Pune. “We have seized an Indian passport and other Indian documents from the accused. Further investigation is on,” Patil said.

Probe revealed that the accused is a native of Bangladesh who allegedly crossed the international border in 2014 without the necessary permissions.

The police suspect that he initially procured a fake Indian birth certificate and used it to obtain other documents like Aadhaar card, PAN card, voter’s ID and an Indian passport.

Investigation is on to determine how he arrived in India and who helped him illegally procure Indian identity documents.

The police booked the accused under sections 318, 336, 338 and 340 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and sections of the Passport Act and Foreigners Act.
