A man who allegedly raped a woman on the false assurance of marriage, and his friend who blackmailed and also raped her, have been arrested after the duo made sexual advances at her younger sister, police said. The 28-year-old woman was repeatedly raped over a period of three years, impregnated and forced to undergo an abortion, said the police.
After the woman approached the Vakola police, the duo was arrested Tuesday. According to the police, accused Mahesh Baleed (22) and Balu Dhotre (25) were arrested from Kalina, Santacruz East, on Tuesday morning. In June 2012, the police said, Baleed, who is unemployed, befriended the victim who was then working at a dispensary in Kalina. “They became friends, and Baleed told her that he loved her. On day, when the victim was working alone at the dispensary, Baleed came to visit her and raped her. The victim said she would file a complaint, but Baleed assured her that he would marry her,” said Inspector Dilip Yadav of the Vakola police station.
Baleed’s friend Dhotre then approached her and blackmailed her. “Dhotre told the victim he had seen her having sex with Baleed at the dispensary and would tell her family and neighbours. Dhotre compelled the victim to have sex with him,” Yadav said. He added that Dhotre allegedly raped the victim many times. “In January this year, when the victim was two months pregnant, Dhotre forced her to undergo an abortion,” Yadav said.
Last week, Baleed allegedly turned his attention towards the victim’s 23-year-old sister. “On May 16, Baleed phoned the victim’s sister and said he and Dhotre had raped her sister repeatedly since 2012. He said they would tell her family about her older sister’s sexual relations. In order to not do so, Baleed told the sister to have sex with him,” Yadav said.
When she told her elder sister about Baleed’s threat, the latter decided to approach the police. A case of rape was filed against the two. “They have been remanded in police custody until May 22,” Yadav said.
