In an attempt to pacify around 17 lakh government employees on strike, the Maharashtra cabinet on Friday cleared the decision to allow family pension schemes for those who joined service after 2005. Family pension is given to the kin of government servants in case of death of the latter during the service period. The said scheme has been applicable to central government employees since 2018.

According to government officials, at present families receive an ex-gratia amount. The decision would mean that employees who joined after 2005 will now be eligible for family pension scheme. Government employees have been on indefinite strike from March 14 demanding implementation of the old pension scheme (OPS) for government, semi-government, teaching and non-teaching staff. The state government has formed a three-member committee of retired bureaucrats to study the old and new pension schemes, compare them and give its recommendations. Despite this, employees are firm on their decision of indefinite strike.
