With the largest faction of the Republican Party of India (RPI) led by Ramdas Athawale teaming up with the Shiv Sena-BJP for an agitation against the Congress-NCP government on June 9 in the run-up to the local body polls across the state, the NCP has sought to change laws and introduce new welfare schemes to woo Dalits.

NCP state general secretary Munaf Hakim said party president Sharad Pawar had asked for feedback from party leaders and experts on the issue. He said in the changing circumstances, some outdated laws had to be amended and some new schemes launched for the welfare of Dalits.

For instance,in the wake of fall in job opportunities in the government, reservation for backward classes was losing its importance and alternatives like quota in private sector or compelling government contractors, institutions and businesses enjoying government help to take some affirmative action, could be considered. Besides, new schemes that would be foolproof and reach the beneficiaries are being contemplated.

He said a panel headed by the party state president Madhukar Pichad would compile suggestions on the new laws and welfare schemes and declare them at a Dalit rally to be organised by the party in Mumbai on June 10. It would be the highlight of the party’s Foundation Day celebrations.

The NCP exercise comes after Athawale,an ally of Pawar since 1990,joined hands with the saffron parties. Athawale allying with the Sena-BJP has jolted the NCP,which wants to consolidate its position among Dalits. NCP Backward Class Cell president Ram Pandagale claimed that the party had a strong base among Dalits, who would not be lured by Athawale because they knew that the Saffron parties were communal.

Pawar to address youth rally today

Union minister and NCP president Sharad Pawar, who had skipped the party’s extended working committee meeting on Thursday in Mumbai,is scheduled to address a youth rally to be organised at Ganpatipule in Ratnagiri district on Saturday. The rally is part of a series of rallies planned by the party to woo different sections of society in the run-up to local body polls, for which the Congress and NCP are preparing to fight separately.
