Manoj-Jarange Patil, Maratha activist who was on a fast-unto-death since October 25 to protest the government delay in granting reservation to the community, withdrew his hunger strike on Thursday after a delegation of legal experts went to Antarwali Sarathi village in Jalna to convince him to end his fast and explain the legalities of the quota issue, that will stand the test of law in court.  Among those who were part of the delegation are retired judges M G Gaikwad and Sunil Shukre.

Justice (retd) M G Gaikwad

In 2018, the BJP-Shiv Sena coalition government led by then CM Devendra Fadnavis had given Maratha reservation based on the M G Gaikwad Commission report. The former judge and chairman of the Maharashtra State Backward Class Commission had played an important role in preparing the report that determined the socio-economic and educational backwardness of the Maratha community. Five years later, on November 2, Justice (Retd) Gaikwad was roped by the government to mediate with Maratha activist Jarange Patil to end the impasse.

Gaikwad was enrolled as an advocate in August 1968. He joined the judicial services in 1974.  He served as an additional registrar at the Aurangabad bench of the Bombay High Court and as district judge at Raigad, Solapur and Pune. He was appointed as an additional registrar at Bombay High Court. He also worked as a law secretary. He was appointed as an additional judge of the Bombay HC from August 2003. He retired in October 2007.

Justice (retd) Sunil Shukre

A former judge of the Bombay High Court, Sunil Shukre, who was part of the state government delegation, played a significant role in breaking the deadlock with Patil. Shukre retired as Bombay High Court judge in October 2023.

He worked as principal district judge Kolhapur, registrar (administration) of the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court, joint director of Maharashtra Judicial Academy, Thane, principal district judge, Nagpur, and took charge as Registrar General of Bombay High Court in March, 2011. He was elevated a judge of the Bombay High Court in 2013.
