The Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) has invited tenders for the procurement of 2,856 Vande Metro coaches that will be deployed on Mumbai suburban lines. Earlier, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw declared that the Mumbai suburban network will get Vande Metro on the lines of semi high-speed Vande Bharat trains that are currently running on long distance routes.
The MRVC has said that the procurement will be with stringent maintenance requirements of the rakes for the entire 35 years. The last day for submission of tenders is September 29. Two maintenance depots will be set up at Vangaon (WR) & Bhivpuri (CR), where these new rakes will be maintained, said officials.
The trains will be equipped with an automatic door-closing system and fully-vestibuled coaches, infotainment with large digital display panels for passengers, dynamic route maps, indication for enroute stations, destinations, real time clock, door opening side, and digital destination boards on both sides of car in addition to front and rear of the train.
Besides, separate luggage compartments at both ends of train will be made available. The MRVC said the luggage compartment will have to be segregated from the AC air circulation vents so that the smell of items like fish, etc does not cause inconvenience to commuters travelling in other coaches.
The Vande Metro trains will have maximum operational speed of 130 kmph. The car body of aluminum alloy or stainless steel will have design life of 35 years.
“The decision to procure Vande Metro Suburban rakes reflects the government’s long-term vision for suburban rail networks and emphasizes their commitment to providing world-class transportation facilities to commuters. The introduction of these state-of-the-art trains will undoubtedly elevate the suburban travel experience,” said Subhash Chand Gupta, CMD MRVC.
