The Maharashtra Police on Friday lodged a case against former Bihar deputy chief minister Tejashwi Yadav for allegedly making defamatory and socially divisive remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi on social media.

The First Information Report (FIR) was lodged at Gadchiroli police station following a complaint by Maharashtra BJP MLA Milind Ramji Narote.

Narote, who represents the Gadchiroli Assembly constituency, stated in the FIR that some of his party workers had informed him about posts on Yadav’s official X account (@yadavtejashwi) on Friday. The posts, he said, described the Prime Minister as a “liar” and accused him of making false promises, the FIR said.

The MLA claimed in the FIR that he had personally verified the posts, which also included a song critical of Modi, alleging that he “lies morning and evening”. According to Narote’s complaint, these messages were “defamatory, derogatory and socially divisive” and intended to create fear and insecurity among citizens.

“Such propaganda has caused resentment among sensible citizens of Gadchiroli and is aimed at disturbing peace and harmony,” the MLA said in his complaint. He further alleged that Yadav had been making such comments repeatedly on social media, and the present posts amounted to a criminal act. Narote also submitted screenshots of the posts as evidence.

A case has been registered under sections 196(1)(a) (use of words, signs, visible representations, or electronic communication to promote hatred or ill-will), 196(1)(b) (involve acts that are prejudicial to the maintenance of harmony between these groups), 356(2) (derogatory or defamatory statements against the government with the intent to cause public mischief), 356(3) (repeated acts of such derogatory statements or publications), 352 (causing public mischief) and 353 (2) (attempts to spread disharmony or hatred through written, spoken, or digital communication, including social media) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
