As many as 15 students of the Kreating Charakters Acting Academy in association with Akshara,a women’s rights organisation, staged a street play on Wednesday in order to sensitise men on gender issues.

The play,Mohe Bitiyaa na deejo, depicted the irony of being born a woman. The play described how a family rejoices when they get a girl baby with the consolation that it is Laxmi’s incarnation. But at the same time, people pray that next time they should get a boy baby.

Be it a college,or a local train compartment,a women faces physical and mental abuse everyday.

“This is an attempt to address the violence against women. We thought it to be more effective to sensitise men against the menace, and urge them to stop violence against women,” said Samar Jai Singh, director,Kreating Characters.

The play also urged people to use the bell bajao concept wherever they see any violence against women.

“The streetplay is one of the most popular ways to approach men and to request them to stop violence against women. That way,we can make Mumbai a safe city,” said Nandita Shah,co-director of Akshara.
