Sore over nearby liquor store,Andheri school writes to cops

Biju Chittilappilly, director of the school, has written to the senior inspector at the station, saying students and teachers are “ill-treated” by drunkards.

MUMBAI: St Mary’s School,Andheri, has sent a written complaint to Versova police station against a liquor shop within 100 metres of the school premises. As per Central Excise Department guidelines,a liquor store cannot operate within a 100-metre radius of a school.

Biju Chittilappilly, director of the school, has written to the senior inspector at the station, saying students and teachers are “ill-treated” by drunkards loitering around the shop. He said it had become a hub of “anti-social elements” who try to lure young students to walk into the shop.

Jayant Jain, president of Forum for Fairness in Education, there are many such liquor shops in Mumbai in close proximity to schools. “As the people running such shops are influential,no action is taken against them,” he said.
