Passenger held for importing endangered monkeys

A passenger was arrested on Wednesday by the Customs at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport,Sahar.

A passenger was arrested on Wednesday by the Customs at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport,Sahar. According to the Customs officials,Thomas Ignatius Fernandes was in possession of three Lemurs,an engdangered species of monkeys,found in the regions around Central South Africa.

Fernandes arrived in a Thai Airways flight from Bangkok. However,two monkeys died in transit.

According to Customs officials,the import of Lemurs is in violation of the provisions of the Customs Act,1962,EXIM policy,IATA Regulations and the Wildlife Act.

The surviving monkey has been sent to the Sanjay Gandhi National Park for treatment.
