A teacher of a Zilla Parishad (ZP) school in Palghar was transferred with immediate effect on Thursday for allegedly slapping a group of students for getting late after fetching water from a nearby source. After an inquiry by the school education department, a separate notice has also been issued to the school seeking an explanation for why the students were sent to fetch water.

According to officials, on November 14, the teacher allegedly sent six boys from the school in Jambulmatha area of Jawhar taluka, to fetch water from a source about one kilometre away. The teacher allegedly slapped them for returning late, leading to the distressed students running into the nearby jungle.

Parents of the affected students submitted a written complaint to the Palghar ZP on Wednesday, detailing the events and demanding strict action. However, teachers claimed that the students were sent to fetch water the previous day but they went home instead of returning to school, prompting the teacher to punish them the next day.

Citing strict guidelines against corporal punishment, the education department immediately initiated an inquiry. Local education officer Sonali Matekar said, “After inquiry, action is taken against the teacher who was working on contractual appointment under Panchayat Extension to Scheduled Areas (PESA)  and for stricter measures an inquiry report is also submitted to the ZP CEO office.”

Responding to queries on whether water scarcity at the school led to sending students to fetch water, Matekar added, “A separate notice is sent to the school seeking an explanation on this.”
