Over 4,260 Ganpati idols were immersed across Mumbai until Sunday evening as the fifth day of Ganesh Visarjan unfolded in the city. This came after over 60,177 Ganesh idols were immersed across the city’s artificial and natural lakes earlier during the Visarjan festivities on Thursday.
The data furnished by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) shows that until 6 pm on Sunday evening, over 4,260 idols, including 4,196 Ganesh idols, were immersed across Mumbai. Besides this, 52 Sarvajanik and 12 Hartalika idols were immersed until Sunday evening. Officials said that no untoward incidents were reported during the events.
Earlier, 60,177 idols were immersed in artificial tanks installed across the city on Thursday of which 30,494 were eco-friendly while 29,683 were Plaster of Paris (POP) idols.
This year, in a bid to protect aquatic life in natural water bodies, the BMC has installed over 288 artificial ponds across Mumbai, marking a jump from the previous year when over 204 artificial ponds were installed. Created using inflatable tubes, artificial ponds are makeshift tanks filled with water, with the deposits from the idols extracted from the tanks and recycled.
