A day after Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar met industrialist Gautam Adani, leader of the Opposition and Pawar’s nephew, Ajit Pawar, defended his uncle over the meeting.
“Everybody knows that Gautam Adani and Sharad Pawar know each other well. There is nothing wrong in the meeting. That allegations are levelled at him (Adani) doesn’t mean he is proven guilty. A committee will be looking into the matter,” said Pawar, addressing a meeting in Pune.
Adani is facing scrutiny over a Hindenburg research firm report and the principal Opposition in the country, Congress, which has demanded a joint parliamentary committee inquiry into the matter. Pawar, known to have a cordial relationship with Adani, has however taken a contrary stance to Opposition chorus by supporting the Supreme Court-appointed committee into the matter. While Congress maintains its position, Pawar’s stand raised questions on the unity of the Opposition tripartite Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) in Maharashtra.
Incidentally, speculations over Ajit Pawar joining hands with BJP have been doing the rounds, a prospect he has denied.
In the situation, Adani called upon Pawar at the latter’s residence in Mumbai on Thursday, with their meeting lasting over two hours. Following the meeting, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut visited Pawar’s residence.
Earlier, on Friday morning, Ajit Pawar speaking tot he press, clarified that due to his scheduled programme at Pune, he would not attend the party programme in Mumbai where all senior leadership of the party would be present.
