A meeting between CIDCO officials and the Ministry of Environment and Forests today failed to reach a decision on the Navi Mumbai airport, said officials from Mumbai who attended the meeting in New Delhi.

A meeting between CIDCO officials and the Ministry of Environment and Forests today failed to reach a decision on the Navi Mumbai airport, said officials from Mumbai who attended the meeting in New Delhi.

Principal Secretary (Urban Development) T C Benjamin said the next meeting has been fixed for the end of the month. “We discussed the proposal for around two hours; the committee said they needed additional details. They will make a formal application for these details soon,” said a CIDCO official.

This had been pegged as a conciliatory meeting where officials were supposed to resolve pending issues.

The Environment Ministry had raised concerns over the diversion of two rivers,Gadhi and Ulwe,as well as the destruction of large swathes of mangrove. CIDCO has said it would replant the mangroves elsewhere.

As reported Wednesday, the Environment Impact Assessment conducted by the IIT’s Centre of Environmental Sciences and Engineering department along with the Central Water and Power Research Station (CWPRS),Pune, and 12 other consultants says that Navi Mumbai is the best option for the airport.
