Officials of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) in Navi Mumbai booked two traffic constables Saturday for allegedly demanding Rs 14,000 from a pick-up truck driver for releasing his vehicle which was caught by the traffic police.
Confirming the development, Thane ACB Superintendent Sunil Lokhande said an FIR was registered against the accused policemen based on a complaint received last month.
The ACB booked head constables Dilip Satpute and Sachin Bhosale from traffic police divisions in Bhiwandi and Shilphata, officials said. The accused had stopped the complainant’s vehicle in Shilphata last month and had sought a bribe to release it. On March 6, the driver filed a complaint with the Navi Mumbai ACB against the two head constables.
Officials who investigated the complaint verified the allegation and found that Satpute, Bhosale and two other unidentified traffic police constables allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 14,000 from the complainant to release his pick-up truck and, after some bargaining, eventually settled on Rs 3,000.
The ACB will also probe if the accused have amassed assets disproportionate to their income, officials added.
