The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) registered a case on Tuesday against three men, including a police sub-inspector and two retired police officers, for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe from a 31-year-old woman lawyer in 2021.

The officials said the woman approached the court, and on the basis of the court’s directive, a case under relevant sections of Prevention of Corruption Act was registered.

According to ACB officials, the three were identified as retired senior police inspector Sunil Kalekar, retired police inspector Arvind Ghag and serving police sub-inspector Swapnali Mande who were attached to Borivali police station. “The woman alleges that she had lodged a complaint against her husband and her in-laws in 2021. A case of dowry was also registered, but the lawyer claims that as she wanted the police to recover the dowry and take strict action against them, the three police officials demanded Rs 5 lakh from her,” said an officer.

In her complaint, the lawyer further alleged that the trio accepted Rs 2.25 lakh from her. “She had lodged a complaint against the three policemen then but as she could not produce any proof, we had to file a closure report,” said an officer from the ACB.

The woman then approached the court, following which the ACB was directed to register a case against the three police officials and investigate. “As per the directions, we have registered a case against the three officers and are probing further,” said a senior official from the ACB.
