The Maharashtra government on Wednesday decided to provide an insurance cover to Warkaris, the devotees of Lord Vithhal, for the “Ashadhi Ekadashi” procession that culminates in the temple town of Pandharpur.
According to officials, the Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis decided to implement a scheme called “Vitthal Rukmini Warkari Bima Chhatra Yojana’”, that would provide an insurance cover for the Warkaris participating in Pandharpur’s Ashadhi Wari. The official said that millions of devotees will get insurance coverage for 30 days through the scheme.
As per the scheme, in case of a death of a Warkari, his kin will be given an ex gratia grant of Rs 5 lakh and Rs 5 lakh will be given in case of permanent disability or disability due to accident. also, Rs 50,000 would be given in case of partial disability and up to Rs 35,000 for medical treatment in case of illness during menstruation.
“The scheme will be implemented through the relief and rehabilitation department,” the official said.
The pilgrimage concludes in Pandharpur town of Solapur district on Ashadhi Ekadashi, which is observed with reverence by followers of Lord Vitthal in Maharashtra. This year, the Ashadhi Ekadashi falls on June 29.
